Peskov: No Discussions Between Putin and Macron on Coordinating Mediation Concerning Iran
SadaNews - Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron did not discuss the issue of Russian mediation during their telephone conversation.
This was stated in Peskov's press briefing on Wednesday, where he noted that the two leaders did not discuss the possibility of coordinating Russia's and the European Union's efforts and providing Russian mediation services in the negotiations between Iran and the United States.
In response to a question on this matter, Peskov answered clearly: "No".
Russian President Vladimir Putin had a conversation with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron for the first time in nearly three years, as the two leaders had not talked for 1,024 days, according to the "Novosti" agency.
The Kremlin press office reported earlier yesterday that Putin and Macron held a phone conversation, highlighting that it was substantial, discussing the situation in Ukraine, the Iranian-Israeli confrontation, and U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Speaking about the prospects for a Ukrainian settlement, President Putin stated that the Ukrainian conflict arose as a "direct result of Western policies." He emphasized that the imposed agreements "must be comprehensive and long-term," and should address the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis, basing them on the new regional reality on the ground.
The Kremlin also stated that the two presidents affirmed the importance of respecting Tehran's legitimate right to peaceful nuclear energy and continuing to fulfill its commitments under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, including cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The two leaders expressed their support for resolving the crisis concerning the Iranian nuclear program through political and diplomatic means.
