Pakistan Assumes Presidency of the UN Security Council for This Month
SadaNews - Pakistan officially assumes the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council starting today, Tuesday, for the current month of July, taking over from Guyana.
The council president, Pakistan's permanent representative to the United Nations, will hold a press conference this evening, New York time, in which he will brief the accredited press on the council's work program following its approval by the Security Council in a morning session.
The council is composed of 15 countries, each with one vote, including five permanent members with veto power: France, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with 10 non-permanent member countries elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly, which include, in addition to Pakistan: Guyana, Greece, Algeria, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Denmark, Somalia, and Panama.
The Security Council is one of the six main organs of the United Nations, which also includes the Secretariat, the General Assembly, the International Court of Justice, as well as the Trusteeship Council and the Economic and Social Council.
