Two Years After the Genocide War: Gaza Communications Amid Challenges and Recovery Hopes
SadaNews: In 2025, nearly two million citizens in the Gaza Strip are still deprived of modern communication services due to restrictions imposed by the Israeli occupation authorities, in clear violation of the residents' right to access technology and basic services, as stated in a statement issued by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority.
The ongoing war has exacerbated the humanitarian situation in the sector, as the infrastructure of the telecommunications sector has sustained severe damage including:
• Destruction of more than 80% of communication networks.
• Total destruction of nearly 55% of cellular sites.
• Destruction of 90% of the fiber optic network and 84% of the copper network.
This destruction has led to an almost complete interruption of communication and internet services in many areas, making it increasingly difficult for citizens to communicate and hindering the provision of essential services in vital areas such as health, relief, and education.
Telecommunication companies face significant challenges in restarting networks due to the difficulties of importing equipment and fuel, and ongoing restrictions that hinder repair and maintenance operations and access to damaged sites, all within a complex security and humanitarian environment.
Despite the magnitude of the challenges, hope remains. Gaza has taught us that life emerges from under the rubble, and that every siege has an end.
While the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority reaffirms its full commitment to supporting national efforts to restore communication services and ensure the citizens' right to communicate and access modern technology, it calls on the international community to assume its humanitarian and legal responsibilities to ensure access to basic services for the residents of the Gaza Strip without discrimination or restrictions.
