The Current Crisis and Its Impact on the Palestinian National Project, and Proposed Solutions

The Palestinian national project is going through a critical and complex stage amid the political, economic, and security challenges facing the Palestinian arena and the region at large. The rapid developments in recent years have led to the creation of a new reality that compels everyone to review national priorities and strengthen factors of resilience and unity to confront the risks that threaten Palestinian national rights.

The most significant effects of the current crisis include diminished opportunities for achieving real political progress towards ending the occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state, in addition to the exacerbation of economic and social conditions accompanied by rising unemployment and poverty rates and a decline in development levels. The continuation of political division further weakens the Palestinian position and affects the ability of national institutions to operate efficiently and effectively.

These challenges have manifested in the Palestinian national project by weakening the internal front, reducing citizens' confidence in the future, and increasing pressures on national institutions that bear a significant responsibility in maintaining the continuity of services and enhancing the resilience of citizens.

To confront these challenges, a set of proposed solutions emerges that could help strengthen the Palestinian national project, foremost of which is achieving national unity and ending division, as this is the essential entry point for unifying Palestinian efforts and energies. The role of national institutions also needs to be strengthened, and the active participation of youth and women in decision-making and future building must be empowered.

The Palestinian national project possesses the historical and popular elements that qualify it to overcome crises, provided that there is political will, collective action, and national responsibility. The challenges, no matter how significant, cannot be stronger than the unity of the Palestinian people and their determination to achieve their legitimate national goals in freedom, independence, and building their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

The ongoing aggression of the Israeli occupation against Palestinian territories and the economic blockade for years has impacted the current political, economic, and social situations facing the Palestinian people and their cause, reaching a highly dangerous level for the first time, which centers around the following:

First: The Political Aspect

The identity of the Palestinian political project has shifted into a humanitarian crisis and its implications for the political case of the Palestinian people, leading to a lack of continued resilience, which necessitates presenting a clear and specific political diplomatic plan capable of responding to Israeli occupation policies and blockade.

From here, the Palestinian leadership must avoid complete political isolation in the Arab, international, and regional arenas, and work vigorously and effectively to continue external mobilization, especially after the success of the Arab and international mobilization for the Palestinian cause following October 7, 2023, and to be excluded from any external political or military agendas or coalitions, and to garner all Arab and international support for the service of the national agenda of the Palestinian cause.

Second: The Economic Aspect

As a result of Israeli occupation policies, assaults, and measures, there are economic distortions and a reduction of control of the Palestinian National Authority over land and natural resources, while increasing settlements and expanding settlement roads. Additionally, the destruction of Palestinian infrastructure and the disconnection of income growth from local production growth, the decoupling of prices from supply and demand, and the concentration of foreign trade with Israel contribute to other structural imbalances. Furthermore, there is a pressing need to work and exert international pressure for the release of the clearance funds that Israel has withheld for years.

Third: The Elements of Liberation from Dependency on the Israeli Economy

It is necessary to adopt a resistant economic policy and establish seriousness in supporting this policy and mobilizing supportive energies to enhance the resilience of all segments of society and strengthen the resilience of economic establishments and the private sector.

The economic crisis has no historical precedence, and its negative aspects have affected all of our people's achievements over the decades, and the bet is on the acumen of the Palestinian leadership and its effective and impactful diplomatic policy, as well as its ability to collaborate with all Palestinian factions and the people to create balanced action that will maintain the Palestinian cause within its national content rather than purely humanitarian, through a unified national program.

No matter how intense and complex the crises are, they should not become a source of despair or frustration, but rather a motivation for self-reflection, enhancing national unity, and organizing priorities. The Palestinian national project is larger than current disagreements and temporary challenges; it draws its strength from the justice of the Palestinian cause, the resilience of its people, and their commitment to their national rights.

The current stage requires everyone to prioritize the higher national interest, enhance partnership, dialogue, and shared responsibility, and work to protect national institutions and strengthen the internal front. The more unified the national will is, the more capable the Palestinian people will be to face challenges and defend their rights and achieve their aspirations for freedom, independence, and dignity.

In light of the current circumstances, national unity and enhancing trust in institutions and joint work based on the higher national interest remain the fundamental pillars for protecting the Palestinian national project and ensuring its continuity and ability to face challenges and fulfill the aspirations of the Palestinian people.

The hope remains that the Palestinians, through their unity and determination, can overcome this difficult phase and preserve the Palestinian national project as the unifying framework for their struggles, ambitions, and the future of their coming generations.
