Taiwan Fires Missiles Toward China from Mobile Launchers During Drill
SadaNews - The Taiwanese military launched missiles toward China from mobile launchers in a "hit-and-run" manner on Wednesday, showcasing how to fend off a potential Chinese attack.
Despite testing the "HIMARS" system supplied to Taiwan by the United States, this live-fire exercise marked the first time Taiwan has fired its missiles toward the waters of the Taiwan Strait, which separates the island from mainland China.
Taiwanese Army Sergeant Wang Ming-Hui stated, "Given the current threat from the enemy (China), we will continue training on the (HIMARS) with unwavering determination to protect Taiwan."
The military noted that it used low-range training missiles that do not fly far from the coast before falling into the waters.
China views Taiwan as a rogue province and indicates that it should eventually come under its control. It sends warships and aircraft around the island and into its airspace almost daily and has conducted major military exercises in the vicinity in recent years.
The United States does not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state, but it opposes any change to the status quo by force and is the main supplier of arms to Taiwan for its self-defense.
