Independence… Between History, the Past, and the Present
Every year, as the discussion of independence approaches, the Palestinian memory recalls a long journey of resilience, and to intertwined milestones written by the fathers and grandfathers with their blood and sacrifices, remaining present in the consciousness of generations regardless of the passage of days and changing circumstances. For us, independence is not merely a memory, but a living issue that renews its meanings, demands, and responsibilities at every stage of history.
History… The Narrative of Peoples and a Measure of Their Resilience
Since the onset of the Nakba, through revolutions and uprisings, culminating in the declaration of independence in 1988, Palestinian history has formed a continuous struggle. The Palestinian has always embodied the meaning of determination to remain on his land, clinging to his identity and rights, rejecting all forms of erasure and distortion.
For us, history is not a recount of events but a document of identity that preserves collective memory and reaffirms the justness of our cause before the world.
The Past… Roots of Strength and Source of Inspiration
The Palestinian past is filled with sacrifices that shaped our national consciousness. The blood of martyrs, the steadfastness of prisoners, the struggles of the national movement, and the sacrifices of historical leaders, most notably the martyr leader Yasser Arafat… all constitute a solid foundation that has made the Palestinian people a school in patience and steadfastness.
The past is not a burden, but a mine of strength that enhances the steadfastness of the present and strengthens the will for the future.
The Present… A Test of Will and Renewal of the Covenant
In our present today, challenges are renewed and responsibilities are amplified. We still face occupation, and the battle for survival and freedom continues in every city, village, and camp.
Amid these challenges, one of the most significant contemporary political developments emerges: the expanding circle of international recognition of the State of Palestine. New countries from Europe, Latin America, and Asia have declared their official recognition of the Palestinian state, reflecting a clear shift in the stance of governments and global public opinion regarding the justness of the Palestinian cause.
These increasing recognitions are not merely diplomatic positions, but a consolidation of a historical and legal right and support for the path of freedom and independence. They affirm that the world is beginning to listen more to the voice of the Palestinian people, paving the way towards strengthening Palestine's international status and achieving full membership in the United Nations and materializing the state on the ground.
Towards a Future Worthy of Our Sacrifices
The connection between history, the past, and the present forms a clear compass towards our future.
There is no independence without national unity,
There is no history without preserving memory,
There is no strong present without effective institutions,
And there is no promising future without a vision that unites rather than divides.
For the Palestinian people, independence remains a renewed covenant and an ongoing journey, no matter how the challenges attempt to hinder it.
The will of the Palestinian will remain stronger than occupation, and the dream of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital will remain a reality we move closer to day by day, for history says so, the past proves it, and the present witnesses that we are still here… holding on to our right, advancing towards our future with steadfastness and determination.
