Record Heat Wave in Europe Causes Over 10,000 Deaths
SadaNews - The severe heat wave that hit Western Europe in late June has resulted in over 10,000 additional deaths, according to official data, with the elderly being the most affected, as the number of deaths among those over 65 years old exceeded nine thousand.
Experts confirmed that this wave, which lasted from June 20 to 28, is one of the harshest heat waves the continent has experienced, having placed significant pressure on health care systems and affected energy and infrastructure sectors.
Experts directly linked the rise in deaths to the record heat, noting that it is difficult to attribute this large increase to other factors.
The Copernicus Climate Change Service of the European Union confirmed that last June was the hottest in the history of Western Europe, while scientists argued that the intensity of this wave would not have occurred without the impacts of climate change caused by human activity, which increases the frequency and severity of heat waves.
Heat waves continue to impose a state of emergency in several European countries, as France has raised its alert level to the maximum in large areas, affecting about 26 million people across 37 departments, amid fears of further forest fires.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the majority of recent fires are linked to human activities, warning of the risks of negligence, at a time when fires have consumed over 25,000 hectares since the beginning of the year.
In Germany, the heat wave has led to another consequence, which is an increase in drowning cases, as the country recorded 99 deaths during June, the highest monthly toll since the heat wave of 2003.
The German Water Rescue Association stated that most victims were young males, in light of the significant influx to water bodies during periods of high temperatures.
As for Spain, it witnessed a new tragedy with the death of 11 individuals in a forest fire that broke out in the town of Los Gallardos in the region of Andalusia.
Authorities announced the discovery of burned vehicles and bodies inside them, along with other victims near the fire site, while investigation and forensic teams initiated identity verification procedures and inquiries into the cause of the incident.
These developments come as several countries in Western Europe face repeated heat waves since the beginning of summer, leading to an increase in heat-related deaths and putting additional pressure on authorities trying to mitigate the effects of the increasing extreme climate phenomena.
