Fatouh Welcomes the Approval of the Irish Parliament for Legislation Banning the Import of Settler Products

SadaNews - Palestinian National Council President Rouhi Fatouh welcomed the Irish Parliament's approval of legislation banning the import of products from Israeli settlements established on occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. He considered this step a significant legal and moral shift that aligns with international law and represents a practical stance against the system of illegal settler colonialism.

Fatouh affirmed in a statement issued today, Wednesday, that the Irish decision translates the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice in 2024, which confirmed the illegality of the Israeli occupation of the occupied Palestinian land. It imposes an obligation on countries not to recognize the illegal status arising from it and to refrain from providing any form of support or assistance that helps sustain it.

He expressed his gratitude to Ireland, Spain, and all countries that have taken or are moving towards taking legal and economic actions against settler colonialism, considering these steps responsible measures that enhance respect for international law and put an end to the policies of annexation and the organized plunder of Palestinian resources.

Fatouh urged the international community and EU countries to translate their political positions into binding measures that include banning trade with settlement products, imposing sanctions on the settler colonial system and the leaders of the settler government, and holding the occupying state accountable for acts of terrorism and racism perpetrated by settler gangs, as well as its serious violations of international law and international legitimacy resolutions. This would contribute to ending the occupation and enabling the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination and establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
