UN: Serious outbreak of chickenpox threatens Gaza displaced with 9,300 cases in two weeks
SadaNews: The United Nations warned today, Wednesday, of a widespread and rapid outbreak of "chickenpox" within the camps and shelters for displaced individuals in the Gaza Strip, announcing the registration of approximately 9,300 cases of the disease in just two weeks.
UN field reports indicated that more than half of the infected cases were concentrated in Khan Younis Governorate in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, pointing out that the accelerating outbreak of the disease is directly attributed to the severe overcrowding in the displaced people's tents, the deterioration of water services, the environmental system, and sanitation, along with the sharp rise in temperatures with the onset of summer.
The UN teams confirmed that they have monitored a terrifying spread of rodents, insects, and parasites in 83% of the displacement sites across the sector, alongside the accumulation of thousands of tons of solid waste and the gathering of sewage and stagnant water among the tents, which doubles health risks and signals an uncontrollable epidemic catastrophe in light of the destruction of the health sector.
