10 killed in Russian attack on Kyiv and Ukraine strikes Sevastopol
SadaNews - At least 10 people were killed today, Monday, in a Russian bombing targeting the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, where the sound of dozens of explosions was heard at dawn. Meanwhile, Ukraine has recently intensified its long-range drone strikes inside Russia, targeting energy infrastructure and military objectives.
The head of the military administration in Kyiv, Tymur Tkachinko, stated via the Telegram app that 9 people were killed and 46 others injured in the Russian attack targeted at the capital.
At least one person also died in the Bucha area, located on the outskirts of Kyiv, according to the head of the regional military administration, Mykola Kalatchnyk, who accused Moscow of "deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure once again."
For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated in a statement that it launched a "massive strike" against Ukraine in response to what it described as "terrorist attacks carried out by the Kyiv regime against civilian infrastructure within Russian territories."
The ministry added that Russian forces targeted "facilities linked to the military-industrial complex and the energy and oil sectors in Kyiv and its surroundings, in addition to military airport infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, and Kyiv."
Widespread Damage
Ukrainian emergency services reported that at least 15 residential buildings in Kyiv were damaged, including a 9-story building in the Podilsky district, where rescue teams are working to search for people among the rubble, along with damage to a warehouse in the Obolon district.
Early Monday morning, Ukrainian officials reported that Kyiv was subjected to a Russian missile attack that resulted in casualties, with a possibility of residents being trapped under the rubble of a damaged building.
Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, wrote on the Telegram app that a residential building was bombed in the historic Podil district, adding: "There are people trapped on the floors from the seventh to the ninth." Debris from drones also fell in other neighborhoods, indicating that the military activated air defenses and urging residents to seek shelter.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had spoken yesterday, Sunday, about intelligence indicating that Russia was preparing to launch a major attack on his country.
Attack on Sevastopol
On the other hand, Ukraine has also intensified its long-range drone strikes inside Russia in recent weeks, targeting energy infrastructure and military objectives.
An Ukrainian attack on Monday led to a power outage in the city of Sevastopol located in the Crimea peninsula annexed by Russia, according to Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Moscow-appointed governor of the city.
Razvozhayev wrote on Telegram: "Following an attack by the enemy on energy infrastructure near Sevastopol, electricity was temporarily cut off in our city."
Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that Ukraine refused to stop shelling the town of Kostiantynivka in the east of the country to allow Moscow to deliver the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers killed.
Russian military leaders had informed President Vladimir Putin last Friday that Moscow's forces had taken control of Kostiantynivka, but Kyiv denied this, stating that its forces still control the town.
Kostiantynivka is a strategic area that Moscow has long sought to control as part of its offensives in the Donetsk region.
Stalled Negotiations
These developments come at a time when negotiations to end the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II remain stagnant.
U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart, Zelensky, on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the NATO summit in the Turkish capital, Ankara.
A senior American official stated, "It is clear that President Trump will meet with Zelensky to discuss ways to end the war, as this has always been a significant priority for him."
Zelensky said on Saturday that "there is a real possibility of ending this war, and the determination of the United States is crucial in this regard."
According to diplomatic sources, European NATO member states, along with Canada, are expected to pledge military assistance to Ukraine worth 70 billion euros (about 79.8 billion US dollars) for the years 2026 and 2027.
