America and Iran Postpone Negotiation Round
SadaNews - Attention is turning on the 18th day since the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran, and after 128 days since the outbreak of war, to the future of negotiations between the two sides, amidst a rapid diplomatic movement seen in the region on the sidelines of the funeral ceremony of the former Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, and the continuation of the truce between the United States and Iran.
In this context, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the postponement of talks with Tehran for a week, until after the conclusion of the funeral ceremonies, confirming that neither side will undertake any military escalation during this period.
Trump stated, in remarks to Axios, that "everyone is there, and just one bullet is enough to eliminate them all, but we will not do that because there will be no one left to negotiate with," referring to the participation of Iranian officials in the funeral ceremonies.
He added that the Iranians are "pleading for an agreement," and that Washington and Tehran decided to take a "break" until the ceremonies are concluded.
On the Israeli front, Trump revealed an upcoming meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu next week at the White House, at the latter's request.
Domestically in Iran, the rearrangement of military leadership continues following strikes that targeted several senior leaders during the recent war, as the Revolutionary Guard announced for the first time the appointment of Ali Azmaei as the new commander of its navy, succeeding Ali Reza Tangsiri who was assassinated last March.
Simultaneously, Tehran is experiencing intense diplomatic activity, as Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi held a meeting with Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir, attended by Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsen Naqvi, to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments.
Regionally, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan renewed his criticisms of the Israeli government, calling for efforts to prevent it from dragging the region into a new round of escalation and violence.
As regional capitals await the resumption of U.S.-Iranian negotiations following the conclusion of the funeral ceremonies, the question remains whether the current truce will lead to a new negotiating pathway, or whether the region will again return to the cycle of military confrontation.
