Reports of Suspension of US-Iranian Talks This Week

SadaNews - The Wall Street Journal reported, citing informed sources, that the talks scheduled for this week between the United States and Iran in Switzerland have been suspended, raising questions about the trajectory of negotiations between the two sides.

The suspension comes after Washington announced a few days ago that technical teams would resume meetings in Switzerland to discuss the details of implementing the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries, which includes the Iranian nuclear file, sanctions, and mechanisms for the release of some frozen Iranian assets.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the technical talks would address the technical aspects of the agreement, noting that the memorandum of understanding would be implemented within 60 days, expressing his expectation that Tehran would adhere to its commitments.

Divergent Statements

In contrast, the past few days have witnessed a disparity in statements between Washington and Tehran regarding several issues, including the mechanism for using the released Iranian funds, the return of International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors, as well as the future of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump also announced that Iran "is making very significant concessions," and later stated that Iran "agrees to everything I want," while Tehran has repeatedly denied some of the points mentioned by US officials, especially regarding spending the released funds on purchasing American products.

No official clarifications have yet been issued from Washington or Tehran regarding the reasons for suspending the talks or when they might be resumed, leaving the future of the negotiating trajectory open to several possibilities, despite the continued validity of the announced memorandum of understanding between the two sides.
