Trump: I believe we will reach an agreement with Iran next week
SadaNews - US President Donald Trump announced that he believes an agreement can be reached with Iran to extend the ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz "during next week."
Trump stated in a phone call with ABC News that "things look good... they look good."
He also mentioned that a "minor glitch" occurred but emphasized that he "handled it very quickly," clarifying that it relates to the "discontent" of the Iranians regarding the Israeli attacks on Lebanon.
He added: "I spoke with Hezbollah and said, no shooting, and I spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and said, no shooting, and both sides stopped shooting at each other."
Additionally, Trump considered that a peace agreement with Iran could be "better even than a military victory," adding that "it’s not simple... we are talking about a very large country making an agreement amid very strong animosity."
He continued: "It's not easy for them, and in fact, it's not easy for us either. But we are getting what we need."
Regarding the timing of finalizing the memorandum of understanding for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and approving it, he said: "I think we are talking about next week," indicating that he had not approved it yet because he still "needs to resolve a few more points."
These statements followed Trump’s previous announcement on Monday that talks with Iran are ongoing, despite a report stating that Tehran has suspended indirect negotiations with the United States.
He stated in a post on the Truth Social platform that "talks are continuing at an accelerated pace with Iran."
However, Trump mentioned in phone interviews with media after the report that he had not been informed of Iran's suspension of talks with Washington.
He stated in an interview with NBC News: "They didn’t inform us about that," adding that silence between the two parties would be appropriate and that he was willing to wait.
He continued: "I think we talked enough if you want to know the truth. I think silence would be very good, and it might last a long time."
He asserted that the suspension of negotiations does not mean the United States will start bombing Iran, adding that the US blockade on Iranian ports will remain in place.
In a separate interview with CNBC, the US President stated that he does not care about the end of negotiations, saying: "Honestly, I don’t care if they end... I don’t care at all."
Then shortly after airing the two interviews, he affirmed in a post on Truth Social that talks with Iran are ongoing.
