Oil Declines Amidst Anticipation of Developments in US-Iran Talks

SadaNews Economy - Oil prices declined today, Wednesday, after rising by 4% in the previous session, as traders awaited any clear indications regarding the complex negotiations between Iran and the United States, following a resurgence of hostilities that disrupted efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Brent crude futures fell by 1.5% to $98.05 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures dropped by 1.9% to $92.04 per barrel.

Oil prices had surged yesterday, Tuesday, after the US military launched new strikes inside Iran, which dashed hopes that had prevailed earlier in the week regarding a potential agreement between Washington and Tehran to end the war.

Iran stated yesterday, Tuesday, that the United States violated the ceasefire by bombing targets near the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington confirmed that the strikes were defensive in nature.

Following the ceasefire in April, both sides indicated progress in talks aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil and gas flows, but the current escalation in hostilities threatens those efforts.

In the same context, Israel intensified its airstrikes on Lebanon yesterday, Tuesday, adding pressure to efforts for calm and peace in the region.

Despite this, news of several liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers crossing through the Strait of Hormuz in recent days has supported expectations of the potential reopening of the waterway soon, which could boost global energy supplies.
