A Landslide Victory for the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate President as First Deputy to the President of the International Federation of Journalists
SadaNews - The Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate, represented by its president Nasser Abu Baker, has won the position of First Deputy President of the International Federation of Journalists during the global conference held in Paris, with wide participation from journalism unions and associations from various countries around the world.
This victory crowns the efforts of the Palestinian delegation participating in the conference, which witnessed extensive discussions about the conditions of journalists in conflict areas, ways to enhance international protection for media workers, as well as issues of press freedom and international union solidarity.
This victory is viewed as a significant moral triumph for the sacrifices of Palestinian journalists and a clear message of support from journalists around the world for Palestine, especially in light of the severe risks faced by journalists in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank while fulfilling their professional duties, reflecting the extent of international solidarity with their cause and rights.
Abu Baker confirmed that Palestine's re-election to this leadership position reflects renewed international trust in the role of the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate and strengthens its presence within global union frameworks, given the challenges and violations faced by Palestinian journalists while performing their work.
He pointed out that this victory will contribute to amplifying the voices of Palestinian journalists on international platforms and push for further pressure to provide protection for them and hold accountable those who commit violations against them, especially amidst the escalating targeting of journalists in the Palestinian territories.
The conference witnessed the election of a new leadership for the federation, in addition to the approval of a set of recommendations aimed at enhancing the rights of journalists, improving their working conditions, and addressing challenges related to digital transformations and the spread of misinformation.
The Palestinian delegation included members of the syndicate's board and the general secretariat: Bilal Ghaith Kaswani, Ayman Noubani, Youssef Habash, Reema Al-‘Amleh, and Wissam Yassin.
The International Federation of Journalists is one of the largest union organizations in the world, with hundreds of thousands of journalists as members through national unions and federations in more than 140 countries, playing a pivotal role in defending press freedom and the rights of journalists worldwide.
This victory comes as part of the increasing presence of Palestine within international institutions and continuous efforts to enhance Palestinian representation in global professional bodies, serving journalists' issues and supporting their struggle for press freedom.
