U.S. Secret Service agents shoot armed man near the White House
SadaNews - Secret Service agents shot an armed man in downtown Washington, D.C. on Monday, according to officials, prompting a temporary lockdown of the White House.
Matthew Quinn, the Deputy Director of the agency, announced that the shooting occurred near the "National Mall," shortly after Vice President Jay D. Vance passed through the area.
He told reporters that he does not believe the Vice President was the target, and he could not speculate whether the incident was related to recent assassination attempts on President Donald Trump.
He mentioned, "I will not speculate on that matter," adding, "I do not know if the shooting was directed at the President or not, but we will find out."
Quinn noted that the shooting occurred after Secret Service agents spotted a "suspicious person" who appeared to be carrying a firearm.
He said the man fled on foot after officers approached him, then brandished his weapon and fired.
He continued that Secret Service agents responded by shooting at him and wounded him, and he was transported to the hospital, with his health status unknown immediately.
Quinn pointed out that a bystander, a minor, sustained minor injuries.
This incident comes about a week after an armed man attempted to breach a hotel in Washington where Trump was attending a White House Correspondents' Association dinner.
