Report: Iran Records Horrific Execution Rate in 2025

SadaNews - A joint report by the "Iran Human Rights" organization based in Norway and "Together Against the Death Penalty" from France revealed that Iranian authorities executed at least 1,639 people in 2025, marking the highest annual figure recorded since 1989.

The report indicated that the number of executions recorded last year represents a 68 percent increase compared to 2024, which saw 975 executions, noting that among those executed were 48 women.

The two organizations warned that Iranian authorities may expand the use of the death penalty in the upcoming period, especially after the protests in January and the recent war with Israel and the United States.

The report stated that there is a "serious danger" that Tehran will use executions more as a tool for "repression and control" in the coming phase.

According to the report, the recorded figure amounts to more than four executions daily on average, with the organization confirming that the toll represents the "minimum confirmed" due to its reliance on two independent sources to document each case, amidst the Iranian authorities' lack of official announcements on the majority of executions.

The report also warned that "hundreds of detained protesters" remain at risk of facing death sentences and their execution after being charged with offenses that carry the death penalty related to the January 2026 protests.

These protests witnessed a wide-ranging security crackdown, which human rights organizations said resulted in the deaths of thousands and the arrest of tens of thousands.

The report emphasized that the death toll for 2025 is the highest since the "Iran Human Rights" organization began documenting executions in 2008, and it is also the highest recorded in the country since the early years following the 1979 revolution.
