Largest Increase Since World War II.. Trump Requests a Defense Budget of $1.5 Trillion
SadaNews - The White House announced today, Friday, the submission of the 2027 budget request to Congress, which includes defense spending amounting to $1.5 trillion, an increase of 42% over the current year.
The White House clarified that this represents another "historic" increase in the defense budget, amounting to $445 billion.
In exchange for this increase, the budget request includes a reduction in non-defense spending by $73 billion, a decrease of 10%.
The White House also outlined the priorities for next year's budget, which include "restoring American maritime dominance," as the request includes funding to build 123 ships to meet the needs of the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security.
This move marks the largest annual increase in military spending since the end of World War II, placing missile defense programs at the top of the administration's priorities. The budget request includes funding for the program known as "Iron Dome" at an estimated cost of about $185 billion.
Additionally, it encompasses fighter jets of the "F-35" variety and warships from Lockheed Martin, as well as Virginia-class submarines manufactured by General Dynamics and Huntington Ingalls Industries.
Last year, Trump requested a national defense budget of $892.6 billion before adding supplemental funding of about $150 billion, raising total defense spending to over one trillion dollars for the first time in history.
During his previous election campaign, Trump pledged to achieve a balanced budget within five years, yet he concluded his first term by adding approximately $7.8 trillion to the national debt, putting his current financial plans under scrutiny from investors and decision-makers.
