Report: Saudi Arabia Intensifies Direct Communication Channels with Iran to De-escalate Tensions
SadaNews - A report by Bloomberg revealed that Saudi Arabia has intensified its direct communication with Iran in an attempt to contain the ongoing war in the Middle East, which has caused widespread disruptions and burdened global markets, according to several European officials.
Officials told Bloomberg that Saudi officials have activated their backchannel diplomacy with Iran in recent days with a greater urgency to reduce tensions and prevent the escalation of the conflict.
They noted that several European and Middle Eastern countries support these efforts.
They added that the communications involved security agencies and diplomats from both sides, but it is unclear whether they have reached higher leadership levels, and Iran has so far shown limited inclination to engage in negotiations with the United States or Israel.
These moves came at a time when Iran responded to U.S. and Israeli strikes that began on February 28 by launching missile attacks and drone strikes on neighboring Gulf countries.
In return, Gulf states have urged Iran to avoid targeting them in any military response, while asserting that the United States and Israel cannot use their airspace or territory to launch attacks on Iran.
Thus far, both the United States, Israel, and Iran have publicly declared that the war will continue for at least weeks.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Friday that he would only accept "unconditional surrender" from Tehran, later clarifying that he meant the destruction of Iran's military capabilities, not an official declaration from Tehran.
