The IMF Disburses Approximately $2.3 Billion to Egypt Following Two Reviews of the "Reform" Program
SadaNews - The International Monetary Fund has disbursed funding to Egypt amounting to nearly $2.3 billion, following the completion of the fifth and sixth reviews of the economic reform program implemented by Cairo under the "Extended Fund Facility".
In March 2024, the Fund had approved an expanded financing package worth $8 billion extending over four years to support the Egyptian economy, which is facing severe pressures, in exchange for implementing a series of monetary, fiscal, and structural reforms.
In March 2025, the Fund also approved granting Egypt an additional loan of $1.3 billion.
The Fund stated in a statement that around $2 billion would be available for Egypt to withdraw after the completion of the last two reviews, in addition to $273 million under the "Resilience and Sustainability Facility" following the completion of the first review under this mechanism.
It pointed out that "the macroeconomic situation in Egypt has improved amid ongoing stability efforts," noting that tight monetary and fiscal policies, along with exchange rate flexibility, had contributed to restoring stability, reducing inflation rates, and enhancing the external position.
On the other hand, the Fund warned that the pace of structural reforms within the program has been "uneven," and that efforts to reduce the state's role in the economy have been slower than expected.
