Escalation of Violations Against Palestinian Journalists During January 2026
SadaNews - The month of January 2026 recorded a noticeable escalation in the volume and severity of violations committed against Palestinian journalists, according to documentation by the Freedoms Committee of the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate.
These violations included murder, detention, gunfire, armed threats, confinement, obstruction of coverage, physical assaults, as well as targeting media institutions and confiscation of equipment.

Increase in Direct Targeting
The Freedoms Committee documented the martyrdom of three journalists while performing their journalistic duties in the Gaza Strip, indicating a dangerous continuation of direct targeting of media personnel.
Additionally, six cases of direct gunfire towards journalists were recorded, along with eight cases of armed threats, which posed a direct danger to their lives.
Arrests and Trials
Seven incidents of detention of journalists were witnessed during the month, including individuals transferred to administrative detention, as well as four decisions and trials described as unjust, in the context of restricting journalistic work and attempts to deter media coverage.
Suppression of Field Coverage
The report recorded 42 cases of detention and obstruction of journalistic work, the highest number among violations, reflecting a systematic policy of restricting field coverage, especially during military incursions and field activities.
The occupation forces launched tear gas and sound bombs 21 times at journalists, causing several of them to suffer from suffocation.
Physical Assaults and Targeting of Equipment
Journalists faced three direct assault incidents, alongside seven cases of confiscation and destruction of journalistic equipment, attempting to obstruct the transmission of truth and prevent documentation of violations.
Settler Assaults
The report documented four assaults carried out by settlers against journalists, which included obstruction of coverage, hindering work, and attempts to steal photographic equipment, in the absence of any protection for media personnel.
Targeting Media Institutions
Two cases of closure of media institutions were recorded, within the framework of tightening restrictions on media outlets, in addition to imposing financial fines on journalists, as part of economic and legal pressure on them.
Mohammad Al-Laham, head of the Freedoms Committee at the syndicate, commented that the incidents of occupation crimes against journalists reflect a serious and systematic escalation of violations against Palestinian journalists, whether through direct targeting, field repression, or legal and administrative restrictions. These data indicate the continued hazardous environment in which Palestinian journalists operate, amid ongoing attempts to silence media coverage and prevent the transmission of truth.
