President Receives Draft Constitution for the State of Palestine

SadaNews - Today, Thursday, President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas received the draft constitution for the State of Palestine.

This occurred during his reception of the committee for drafting the Palestinian temporary constitution, headed by the committee chairman, counselor Mohammed Haj Qassem, along with committee members.

He praised the significant efforts made by the committee members to draft the temporary constitution for the State of Palestine, paving the way for the transition from authority to state status, which has been recognized by more than 160 countries so far.

The president stated that this year is the year of democracy, as we have set the date for holding elections for the Palestinian National Council both at home and abroad, as well as scheduling the eighth conference of the Fatah movement, in addition to local elections in the upcoming month of April.

He emphasized that the texts of the constitutional articles, especially regarding rights and freedoms, protect citizens' rights. It also enables the effective representation of women and youth, reflecting their status in Palestinian society.

Haj Qassem indicated that the committee, which was formed by presidential decree, began its work immediately upon being commissioned by the president, completing its tasks over approximately seven continuous months, during which they held 70 meetings and engaged with various civil society organizations and relevant parties.

The committee chairman noted that the draft constitution preserves political pluralism and the separation of powers, in addition to empowering the parliament to exercise its oversight and legislative powers.

The president has instructed that a copy of the draft constitution for the State of Palestine be forwarded to the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization for review, and then published for the public to receive comments and suggestions. A decision will be issued regarding the publication procedures, mechanisms, and timeline.
