Israel Decides to Expand the Unit for Protecting Its Officers Abroad
SadaNews - The Israeli occupation army radio reported from sources that the General Staff has decided to expand a unit responsible for protecting senior army officers and military delegations abroad, fearing retaliation from Iran and other organizations due to the assassinations carried out by Tel Aviv as part of the war on Gaza.
The sources reported a significant increase in the number of officers who have been provided with protection, following more than two years since the war during which Israel targeted leaders of organizations in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran.
The officers' security unit is relatively small, under the command of a major, consisting of permanent security guards, along with a large reserve formation.
The unit primarily secured the current and former chief of staff, and not all missions abroad enjoyed enhanced security.
In the operations section, it was decided to increase the number of unit personnel several times. For the first time, regular security guards will be appointed on a large scale, and soon the first regular cohort will be recruited, also to alleviate the burden on reservist soldiers in the unit.
The sources added that at the same time, the unit commander will be promoted to the rank of colonel due to the heightened threat level to many officers in the Israeli army.
The number of officers being sheltered today has risen, fearing attempts at retaliation from Iran and other organizations.
Israel has assassinated leaders in Palestinian resistance factions, the Lebanese Hezbollah, in addition to Iranian officials during its war on Gaza that began on October 7, 2023.
