Turkish-French Talks on the Situation in Gaza Following Hakan Fidan's Meeting with Hamas Delegation in Ankara

SadaNews - Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan discussed developments related to the Gaza Strip and the implementation of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, as well as ways to deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinians sustainably, with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot.

Fidan stated in a joint press conference with Barrot at the end of their discussions in Ankara on Tuesday that Turkey and France have numerous cooperation files that include important regional and international issues such as Gaza, Syria, developments in Iran, Mediterranean security, and the Russian-Ukrainian war, and that these topics and many other issues were discussed during the talks.

France announced that it would not currently join the "Peace Council" which U.S. President Donald Trump and several leaders and representatives of countries signed its establishment charter on the sidelines of the "Davos Forum" last Thursday, considering that its charter is inconsistent with a United Nations resolution related to the war-ending plan in Gaza, in addition to some of its clauses conflicting with the international organization's charter.

Discussions with Hamas

The discussions between Fidan and Barrot came the day after the Turkish foreign minister met with a delegation of officials from Hamas, headed by member of the movement's political bureau Khalil Al-Hayya in Ankara on Monday, where the second phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the humanitarian situation in the sector were discussed.

A source from the Turkish Foreign Ministry stated: "Fidan informed the Hamas officials about the efforts Turkey is making in global forums, including the (Peace Council) chaired by Trump, to protect the rights of the people of Gaza."

During the meeting held at the Turkish Foreign Ministry headquarters, Fidan emphasized that "Turkey will steadfastly continue its efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip."

Trump announced in mid-January that the second phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza had begun, as part of his 20-point plan to end the war in the sector, which was adopted by the UN Security Council in its resolution 2803 issued on November 17, 2025.

The meeting between Fidan and the Hamas delegation followed a similar meeting held by Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin with the delegation in Istanbul last Saturday to discuss the peace plan in Gaza, which has entered its second phase.

A Turkish security source stated, "The two sides agreed to continue consultations on increasing humanitarian aid, opening the Rafah border crossing in both directions, starting the work of the national committee for Gaza management, and other issues."

The source added that the Hamas delegation expressed its gratitude to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the role Turkey has played so far as a mediator and guarantor for achieving peace in Gaza, as well as for the increasing role it is playing in the second phase of the peace plan, which includes disarming Hamas and the other Palestinian factions, implementing an additional withdrawal of the Israeli army from Gaza, and initiating reconstruction efforts.
