Report: Washington Achieves Its Strategic Goals in Greenland "at a Low Cost"

SadaNews: Sources revealed on Thursday that the draft agreement between the United States and NATO regarding Greenland includes a set of strategic frameworks, the most notable of which relates to raw materials and enhancing the defense agreement for the island, while assuring that Denmark's sovereignty will not be compromised. The sources indicated that Washington has managed to achieve its strategic goals at a low cost.

According to what Axios reported, U.S. President Donald Trump discussed with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte during the Davos Forum on Wednesday the principle of respecting Denmark's sovereignty over the island. Rutte presented a proposal to Trump that does not involve transferring full sovereignty over Greenland from Denmark to the United States.

The plan includes updating the "Defense Agreement for Greenland" signed in 1951 between the United States and Denmark, which allowed Washington to build military bases on the island and establish "defensive zones" as needed. It also contains provisions to enhance security in Greenland and expand NATO activities in the Arctic, in addition to projects related to raw materials.

The proposal also raises the idea of establishing a "Golden Dome" in Greenland to counter external influence, particularly from Russia and China. According to the sources, should the deal be finalized, it would ensure the United States achieves its strategic goals on the island permanently and at a low cost.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Trump's statements, in which he insisted he would not resort to force to seize Greenland and that he would raise tariffs related to the issue, were part of efforts to end weeks of tension with European allies. The agency clarified that several of the president's senior advisors pressured to strike a balance between Trump's demands and the need to alleviate growing concerns among NATO partners, as translated by SadaNews.
