European Opposition Expected to Trump's "Peace Council" Announcement

SadaNews - Diplomats anticipate that U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement regarding the formation of a "Peace Council" will face significant opposition from European Union countries, which are expected to refuse to join this council that the Kremlin announced today, Monday, that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to join.

One diplomat stated that "no European country is expected to join," explaining that Trump's threats regarding Greenland were "more than sufficient for the European Union," as reported by the newspaper "Haaretz" on its website.

Another diplomat estimated that it is difficult to imagine Putin responding to Trump's invitation and agreeing to operate under his command. Putin faces an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in The Hague due to the invasion of Ukraine, and Russia is under extensive U.S. and European sanctions. One diplomat mentioned that, according to his information, Ukraine has also been invited to the council.

Two other diplomats knowledgeable about the details confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also been invited to join the "Peace Council," with one diplomat noting that Netanyahu was aware that Turkey and Qatar would claim membership in the "Peace Council" and the executive committee managing the Gaza Strip, but according to one diplomat, Netanyahu was surprised by the invitation extended to senior representatives from both countries - Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Qatari Prime Minister's Advisor Ali Al-Duwadi - to join the executive committee.

A European diplomat reported that ambassadors from EU countries held emergency consultations yesterday in response to Trump's warning regarding Greenland, and the topic of the "Peace Council" was also raised.

The diplomat added that the formation of the "Peace Council," to which some European countries have been invited, is directed not only against the United Nations but also against the European Union. He mentioned that the Trump administration has publicly indicated that it is opposed to the European Union, "which is why the administration is trying to divide member states and supports the far-right in Europe."

Governments stated yesterday that Trump's establishment of a "Peace Council" to resolve global conflicts is a plan that undermines the work of the United Nations. The newspaper quoted a diplomat from Latin America stating that "as much as this initiative may seem to enhance a superpower at the expense of collective solutions, there is no doubt that we would prefer any United Nations initiative."

According to a version of the invitation letter and a draft charter, Trump will chair the council for life, beginning with the Gaza issue, and then expand its scope to address other conflicts. The letter also states that the membership duration for any country will be limited to three years, unless that country pays one billion dollars to fund the council’s activities, thereby obtaining permanent membership.
