Israeli Foreign Minister Arrives in Somaliland
SadaNews - Media sources have reported the arrival of an Israeli delegation headed by Foreign Minister Gidon Sa'ar in Somaliland.
This visit comes just a few days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Tel Aviv's recognition of Somaliland's independence from Somalia, making it the first UN member to take this step.
The Israeli move has been met with widespread global condemnation.
Channel 14 in Israel stated that the meetings the Israeli delegation will hold with officials in Somaliland are expected to focus "on security and political cooperation."
It also pointed to reports regarding the "possibility of establishing Israeli defense facilities in the strategic region."
It explained: "Somaliland may allow Israel to use specific areas of its territory for potential military purposes, including the establishment of defense facilities. Neither party has confirmed these reports, but the strategic location of Somaliland makes it likely."
Dani Danon, Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, asserted: "No one can ignore the strategic location of Somaliland, as the straits are a strategic point."
