Deputy Attorney General Accuses Israeli Government of Violating Supreme Court Ruling on Drafting Haredim
SadaNews - Deputy Attorney General Gile Lemon accused the Israeli government during its weekly meeting today, Sunday, of violating a Supreme Court ruling that mandates the government to determine, by today, an enforcement policy to draft Haredim who have received military recruitment orders.
The Supreme Court had decided last November that the government must take immediate steps to enforce penal law against Haredim evading military service, and that it must decide on economic and civil sanctions within 45 days.
The court also determined at the time that the government would not be able to circumvent economic sanctions and allow a funding channel that benefits Haredim evading service, and that it could not continue to provide them with personal benefits directly or indirectly.
The court's ruling stated that the government is neglecting its duty to enforce the drafting of Haredim, thereby emptying the security service law of its meaning.
On the other hand, Lemon stated that a formal investigatory committee is the appropriate tool to investigate the failures that led to the October 7 attack. He added, "The public has the right to know what led to October 7, what the failures were, and who should be held accountable."
Lemon explained that "through a formal investigation committee, the government decides on its formation and the subject to be investigated, thus ending its influence on the matter."
Regarding the draft law for the political investigation committee that the government decided to form, Lemon said, "The draft law provides for a system under complete political control regarding the composition of the committee and the subjects of investigation, and you are turning the investigation into a political event."
