America Takes Venezuelan President for Investigation and Broadcasts Photos of Him
SadaNews - President of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro arrived in the United States on Saturday evening local time after being arrested by American forces during a military operation in Caracas, and is expected to appear before a federal court in Manhattan, New York, tomorrow, Monday.
Maduro was taken to the offices of the Drug Enforcement Administration in New York where he is undergoing preliminary questioning in preparation for his trial, just a few hours after arriving by plane at a military base operated by the National Guard north of the city.
Live footage showed the Venezuelan president surrounded by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as he disembarked from a federal government plane at Stewart Air Force Base.
Maduro was then transported by helicopter to Manhattan in New York, where the Drug Enforcement Administration is headquartered.
After being interrogated at the agency, he is expected to be transferred to a detention center in the Brooklyn area of the city, according to American media sources.
The Venezuelan president will later appear before a judge in New York to respond to charges including "drug-related terrorism" and the export of cocaine to the United States, charges he has repeatedly denied in the past.
Reuters reported that a U.S. Department of Justice official expects Maduro to appear before a federal court in Manhattan tomorrow, Monday.
U.S. officials also told CNN that the charges Maduro will face are expected to be related to drugs and weapons.
