Hebrew Channel: Russia Mediates Between Syria and Israel to Reach a Security Agreement
SadaNews Translation - The Hebrew channel Reshet Kan reported on Wednesday evening that Russia is secretly mediating, with American approval, between Israel and Syria in talks aimed at reaching a security agreement between the two countries.
According to the Hebrew channel, as translated by SadaNews, the meetings are being held in Azerbaijan.
The channel quoted an Israeli security source stating that Moscow and Damascus are working to strengthen their relations, which was evident last month when Russia moved troops and equipment to the Latakia region, a deployment that had been reduced after the collapse of the Assad regime, but is now operating at a high intensity in Syria.
The Russians are keen on bringing army soldiers back to southern Syria, near the Israeli border, similar to the situation before the fall of the Assad regime.
Israel prefers to allow a Russian presence, which may come at the expense of any Turkish attempt to establish its presence in southern Syria.
The security source said that there are still gaps that remain, despite the Russian mediation, but some progress has been made in recent weeks.
