Sheikh Meets Al-Safadi to Discuss the Situation in Gaza and the West Bank

SadaNews - On Tuesday, Palestinian Vice President Hussein Sheikh met with Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Al-Safadi, and they held talks focusing on efforts to solidify the ceasefire in Gaza and halt the Israeli escalation in the occupied West Bank.

Sheikh stated in a statement: During our meeting in Amman, we emphasized the necessity of prioritizing the ceasefire in Gaza and adhering to all provisions of the ceasefire agreement, progressing towards the second phase of the agreement according to the plan of U.S. President Donald Trump, and linking stabilization efforts to a clear political horizon for achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.

He added: We stressed that the future of the Gaza Strip should be based on its unity and connection with the West Bank, and that the Palestinian National Authority must assume responsibility for the sector in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2803. We confirmed that the Gaza Strip is an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territory on which the independent and sovereign Palestinian state must be established based on the two-state solution as per international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. Furthermore, we emphasized the necessity of intensifying efforts to provide adequate and prompt humanitarian assistance to the sector, and the need for Israel to fulfill its obligations under the ceasefire agreement and international law by lifting all restrictions it imposes on the entry of aid.

He indicated that the serious deterioration in the occupied West Bank was discussed, and the necessity of uniting all regional and international efforts to stop the illegal Israeli measures that lead to explosive situations and undermine the chances of achieving a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution was emphasized.

He said: We also affirmed the necessity for Israel to respect the existing historical and legal status at the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and to lift all restrictions on freedom of worship. We confirmed the need for Israel to stop all restrictions on Christians and their right to practice their religious rituals, especially during the celebrations of religious holidays.

He added: We affirmed the continuation of consultations and coordination, as well as working with our brothers and partners to achieve a just and comprehensive peace that entails ending the occupation and establishing the independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the two-state solution and according to international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative as the only path forward.
