Israel is Considering Establishing a Joint Intervention Force with Greece and Cyprus to Confront Turkey
SadaNews: The Hebrew website "Wynet" reported that the political level in Israel has informed the military leadership of a genuine intention to study the idea of forming a "joint intervention force" with Greece and Cyprus, with directions to begin preliminary planning without taking any executive steps so far.
Despite the official Israeli denial of Greek reports regarding the intention to establish this force, military cooperation between Tel Aviv, Athens, and Nicosia is witnessing noticeable expansion through joint air, land, and naval exercises.
According to the report, the potential objective of this force, if established in the future, would be to confront Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially regarding the protection of economic interests and gas and oil resources, in addition to disputes over fishing rights and the gas pipeline project to Europe, which Ankara opposes.
The report also indicated that the Turkish army outmatches its Greek counterpart in terms of size and modernization, while the Turkish Air Force is relatively weaker, which explains the importance of Israel joining to provide its aerial and intelligence capabilities.
The report views this step as potentially changing the balance of power in the region and prompting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to reassess his calculations, in light of what Israel considers "openly hostile policies" from Ankara.
Additionally, Israel fears Turkey's participation in the "International Stability Force" that is to be established within U.S. President Donald Trump's plan for a ceasefire in Gaza, considering that any Turkish role would constrain its military operations against Hamas.
The report concluded that the idea of the "joint intervention force" is still in the preliminary planning stage, and what is currently being discussed is limited to leaks and media signals aimed at pushing Ankara to reevaluate its positions.
