Guterres Calls for Increased Support for Countries Hosting Refugees
SadaNews - The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, called for the need to increase support for countries hosting refugees, especially those with low and middle incomes that "host nearly three-quarters of the world's refugees."
This came in a recorded speech by Guterres presented during the second high-level officials meeting to review the progress made at the Global Refugee Forum that began yesterday, Monday, in Geneva, Switzerland, and will continue until Wednesday, in partnership between the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Swiss government.
He pointed out that "the first international consensus on migration adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2018 still serves as a guide for moving forward."
He added, "We must enhance the integration of refugees into society and their self-reliance, as a dignified means to unleash their human potential."
Guterres emphasized the need to support local economies and reduce dependence on aid, alongside ensuring the safe return of people to their homes, as was done by one million Syrians last year.
