"The General Assembly" overwhelmingly adopts a resolution affirming the Palestinian people's right to self-determination

SadaNews - The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution today, Monday, affirming the Palestinian people's right to self-determination.

164 countries voted in favor of the resolution, while only 8 countries voted against it: Israel, the United States, Micronesia, Argentina, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea, Palau, and Nauru. Meanwhile, 9 countries abstained from voting: Ecuador, Togo, Tonga, Panama, Fiji, Cameroon, the Marshall Islands, Samoa, and South Sudan.

It is noteworthy that the presence of far-right and extremist governments in Argentina, Paraguay, and Ecuador prevented these countries from voting in favor of the resolution specifically and other resolutions concerning human rights in general.

The adoption of this resolution comes as an international stance rejecting all of Israel's occupation and settlement practices that hinder the Palestinian people's ability to exercise their right to self-determination and live with dignity in their independent state, especially since the resolution refers in its text to the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion stating that Israel's occupation of Palestinian land is illegal and must end promptly, due to its severe consequences on the Palestinian people's ability to exercise their right to self-determination as guaranteed by the United Nations Charter and international law.

The Permanent Representative of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, praised this resolution and the overwhelming vote in favor of it, thanking the countries that voted positively and emphasizing the near consensus on the Palestinian people's right to exercise their right to self-determination.
