International Criminal Court Rejects Israel's Request to Halt Gaza War Investigation
SadaNews - The appeal judges at the International Criminal Court, today (Monday), rejected another appeal submitted by Israel to halt the court's investigation into its conduct of the war in the Gaza Strip.
In the appeal, the judges declined to overturn a lower court's decision regarding the prosecution's investigation into alleged crimes that fall under its jurisdiction, potentially including events following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
This decision means that the investigation continues, and the arrest warrants issued last year against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant remain in effect.
Israel rejects the jurisdiction of the court based in The Hague and denies committing war crimes in Gaza, where it is carrying out a military campaign it says aims to eliminate Hamas following the attacks on October 7.
The International Criminal Court initially issued an arrest warrant for Hamas leader Mohammed Diab Ibrahim al-Masri, known as Mohammed Deif, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, but it later withdrew that warrant after credible reports of his death emerged.
A ceasefire agreement in the conflict went into effect on October 10, but the war has destroyed much of the infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, in addition to worsening living conditions in Gaza.
Health officials in Gaza say that Israel has killed approximately 67 thousand Palestinians in Gaza. The United Nations often cites their figures.
This ruling focuses on only one of several legal challenges presented by Israel to stop the International Criminal Court's investigations and the arrest warrants issued against its officials.
There is no timetable for the court to rule on the various other challenges to its jurisdiction in this case.
