UN Adopts Resolutions to End Occupation of Palestine and the Golan Heights
SadaNews: The United Nations General Assembly adopted, yesterday Tuesday, two resolutions to end the Israeli occupation of both Palestine and the Syrian Golan Heights.
The draft resolution on Palestine was introduced by Djibouti, Jordan, Mauritania, Qatar, Senegal, and Palestine.
A total of 151 countries voted in favor of the draft resolution, while 11 countries opposed it, including Israel and the United States, and 11 countries abstained from voting.
The adopted resolution reaffirms the responsibility of the United Nations towards the Palestinian cause and calls for an end to the Israeli occupation of territories occupied since 1967, in addition to supporting the two-state solution.
The General Assembly also adopted another resolution put forth by Egypt, calling on Israel to withdraw from the Syrian Golan Heights, referring to its occupation and annexation of the area as "illegal actions."
A total of 123 countries voted in favor of the resolution, while 7 countries opposed it, mainly Israel and the United States, and 41 countries abstained from voting.
The adopted resolution states that Israel's occupation of the Golan Heights and its actual annexation is considered illegal and contradicts UN Security Council Resolution 497 of 1981.
In its first comment on the resolution, the Syrian foreign ministry stated that it "demands Israel to withdraw from all occupied Syrian Golan, considering that the increase in the number of countries that voted in favor of the resolution reflects the extent of support for the new Syria and its adherence to the occupied Golan."
