Trump: The Peace Council in Gaza Will Be Chaired by Me and Include Global Leaders
SadaNews - U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the Security Council's decision regarding Gaza, which includes the establishment of a Peace Council for the Palestinian sector.
He wrote on the "Truth Social" platform: "We congratulate the world on the astounding vote in the United Nations Security Council, which recognizes and supports the Peace Council that I will personally chair, and it will include the most powerful and prominent leaders around the world."
Trump also stated that "the Security Council's decision is one of the biggest decisions approved in the history of the United Nations, and it will lead to more peace worldwide, representing a moment of genuine historical significance."
He clarified that the members of the council will be announced in the coming weeks.
For his part, U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz described the decision as "historic and constructive," adding, "Today's decision represents another important step toward a stable Gaza capable of prospering, and an environment that allows Israel to live securely," emphasizing that the decision is "just the beginning."
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the Security Council's support for Trump's plan is a historic milestone in building peace, adding, "We are closer to achieving a demilitarized and extremism-free Gaza."
He continued: "Gaza will be governed by the Palestinian people, not Hamas."
The United Nations Security Council voted on Monday on a U.S. draft resolution supporting President Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza, which involves the deployment of an international force and a path to a Palestinian state.
Thirteen members of the council voted in favor of the text, while Russia and China abstained from voting but did not use their veto power.
The text, which has undergone several reviews during negotiations within the council, supports the plan that allowed for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas on October 10.
The latest version of the text allows for the establishment of an "International Stabilization Force" to cooperate with Israel and Egypt and the newly trained Palestinian police to help secure border areas and disarm the Gaza Strip.
The "International Stabilization Force" will also work on "the permanent disarmament of unofficial armed groups," protecting civilians, and creating humanitarian corridors.
The decision also permits the establishment of a "Peace Council," which is a transitional governing body for Gaza, theoretically chaired by Trump, with a mandate that will last until the end of 2027.
Unlike previous drafts, this decision indicates the possibility of a future Palestinian state.
The draft states that once the Palestinian Authority implements the necessary reforms and begins the reconstruction of Gaza, "the conditions may finally be suitable for a reliable path for Palestinians to determine their fate and establish a state," according to AFP.
