Lebanon Files Complaint Against Israel for Building Wall Exceeding the 'Blue Line'

SadaNews - The Lebanese presidency announced today, Saturday, that Lebanon will file a complaint with the United Nations Security Council against Israel for building a concrete wall on the southern border of Lebanon "that exceeds the blue line."

The blue line is a boundary drawn by the United Nations, separating Lebanon from Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Israeli forces withdrew to the blue line when they left southern Lebanon in 2000.

On Friday, a spokesman for the United Nations announced that a survey conducted by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) last month concluded that a wall built by the Israeli army crosses the blue line.

Stefan Dujarric, the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, stated that the concrete wall established by the Israeli army has prevented local inhabitants from accessing an area exceeding 4,000 square meters of Lebanese land.

He added, citing peacekeeping forces, that part of another wall that also exceeds the blue line is being built southeast of Yaron.

Dujarric revealed that UNIFIL informed the Israeli army of its findings and requested the removal of the wall.

UNIFIL also noted in a separate statement that "Israel's presence in Lebanese territory and the construction activities it is carrying out there constitute a violation of Security Council Resolution 1701, Lebanon's sovereignty, and territorial integrity."

Resolution 1701 ended a conflict that erupted in 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah and formed the basis for the ceasefire reached on November 27, 2024, between the two sides.

Lebanon accuses Israel of breaching the ceasefire agreement by conducting strikes and keeping forces inside its territory, while Tel Aviv accuses Hezbollah of working to restore its military capabilities.
