Trump Issues Warning to Mamdani: He Will Lose a Lot if He Doesn't Cooperate

SadaNews - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that New York City's elected Mayor Zahran Mamdani should seek to establish a new relationship with Washington, warning that Mamdani will lose a lot if he does not cooperate.

In an interview with Bret Baier of "Fox News," Trump expressed his willingness to talk with Mamdani but emphasized that the new mayor must respect Washington and its financial support for the city if he wants to succeed.

Trump added: "His (Mamdani's) speech was filled with anger towards me, and I think he should be nice to me."

He continued: "I hope to see the new mayor achieve good results because I love the city."

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump stated that the United States lost "some sovereignty" after Mamdani's victory in the New York City mayoral race, pledging to "address the issue."

During an economic conference in Miami, Florida, Trump said, "We lost something of our sovereignty last night in New York, but we will address the issue," referring to the election that brought Mamdani, a Democrat of Indian descent and the first Muslim to hold the position in the largest American city, to power.

Trump noted that the U.S. must choose "between communism and common sense," adding that New York will "soon become a refuge for those fleeing communism."

Trump concluded his speech by stating, "Our opponents are presenting you with an economic nightmare, while we are achieving an economic miracle," in reference to election results that analysts see as punitive to the current administration's policies regarding purchasing power.

Elected New York Mayor Mamdani stated on Tuesday that his decisive victory shows the way to defeat President Trump, who has been a fierce critic of his policies.

Mamdani explained in his victory speech before supporters: "If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that brought him to where he is. New York will be the light in this time of political darkness."

Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, according to the results released by the New York City Board of Elections.

Mamdani will become the first Muslim mayor of the largest city in the United States when he officially takes office on January 1.

Trump made efforts to persuade New Yorkers not to vote for Mamdani, but it seems these efforts were not enough, as were the appeals he made to Jewish voters to prevent the Muslim candidate from becoming mayor of the city.

Trump also threatened before the election to cut federal funding to New York should Mamdani, who is considered part of the left wing within the Democratic Party, win.
