Expectations for the Knesset to Vote on the "Sovereignty Over the West Bank" Law
SadaNews - The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported expectations for the Knesset to vote today on the preliminary discussion of a bill that Tel Aviv calls "imposing sovereignty over the West Bank."
In previous statements, U.S. President Donald Trump said: "I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank... It will not happen." These statements came after some members of the Israeli government hinted at imposing sovereignty over the West Bank, which Trump considered a threat to the two-state solution.
Annexing the West Bank means that Israel officially declares that these territories, which it occupied in 1967, have become part of its national and legal sovereignty, just like East Jerusalem or the Golan Heights. This action goes beyond military or administrative control and means applying Israeli laws to settlements and designated areas, instead of military or temporary civil laws.
Legally, annexation is considered a violation of international law, especially the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit an occupying power from changing the legal status of occupied land. Politically, annexation undermines the chances of a two-state solution and is viewed as a unilateral step that reinforces settlement expansion.
