Smotrich Discusses Expanding 'Normalization' in Washington
SadaNews - Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich discussed with his American counterpart Scott Basset during a meeting held in Washington the available possibilities to expand the Abraham Accords to include new countries in the region, according to SadaNews.
The U.S. Treasury Secretary urged Smotrich for a "full acceptance" of President Donald Trump's plan to end the Gaza War.
According to a statement from the U.S. Treasury, Basset met with Smotrich in Washington on Monday, where they held a "rare meeting."
The American statement highlights the "discontent in Washington" regarding Smotrich's opposition to the U.S. efforts to halt the Gaza War, according to the "Times of Israel."
Smotrich was one of several far-right ministers who voted against approving the first phase of Trump's plan, which includes a ceasefire, a limited Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and a prisoner exchange.
He expressed his opposition to the release of nearly two thousand Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the remaining hostages, while also arguing that the deal "leaves Hamas in power."
Following an attack on occupying forces in Gaza on Sunday, the far-right minister called for the resumption of war, writing on the "X" platform: "War!"
Basset's office stated that he took the opportunity during his meeting with Smotrich to "reaffirm the strong relations between the United States and Israel."
