The United Nations Condemns the Russian Attack on a Humanitarian Aid Convoy in Ukraine
SadaNews - The United Nations Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, condemned the attack carried out by Russian drones on a humanitarian aid convoy in the Kherson region, emphasizing that such attacks "constitute a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law."
The UN humanitarian convoy was attacked yesterday, Tuesday, while delivering medicines, hygiene supplies, and shelter materials to the city of Bilozirka, which is located on the front line and has been severely affected by the war, having not received any aid for months.
During the daily press conference in New York, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations, confirmed that the convoy, consisting of four trucks - led by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs - was "clearly marked" and came under drone fire while unloading supplies, resulting in "two trucks belonging to the World Food Programme catching fire."
Farhan Haq added, "Fortunately, none of the humanitarian workers were harmed."
In a related context, he stated, "The United Nations continues to evacuate civilians from frontline areas of combat, with more than 200 people, including 40 children, having been transported yesterday."
Since February 24, 2022, Russia has been conducting a military offensive against its neighbor Ukraine, conditioning its end on Kyiv's abandonment of joining Western military entities, which Kyiv considers "interference" in its affairs.
