Venezuelan Maria Corina Machado Wins the Nobel Peace Prize
SadaNews - Venezuelan Maria Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize today, Friday, according to the Reuters news agency.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee stated in a statement that she won "thanks to her tireless work in promoting the democratic rights of the people of Venezuela and her struggle for a fair and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."
U.S. President Donald Trump had openly expressed his desire to win the prize, which was awarded to four of his predecessors: Barack Obama in 2009, Jimmy Carter in 2002, Woodrow Wilson in 1919, and Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.
All of them won the prize while in office, except for Carter, and Obama was chosen for the award less than eight months after taking office.
