President Abbas Welcomes Ceasefire Agreement and Affirms Palestine's Sovereignty over Gaza
SadaNews - Today, Thursday, President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of an agreement to cease hostilities in the Gaza Strip, withdraw occupying forces, allow humanitarian aid, and exchange prisoners.
He expressed hope that these efforts would be a precursor to achieving a permanent political solution as announced by President Trump, leading to an end to the Israeli occupation of the State of Palestine’s territory and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The President praised the significant efforts made by President Trump and all mediators to reach this agreement, affirming the readiness of the State of Palestine to work with the mediators and concerned partners to ensure the success of these efforts, in order to achieve lasting and just stability and peace in accordance with international legitimacy.
The President emphasized the necessity for all parties to commit to the immediate implementation of the agreement, the release of all hostages and prisoners, and the introduction of urgent humanitarian aid through United Nations organizations, ensuring no displacement or annexation occurs, and starting the reconstruction process.
He reiterated that the sovereignty over the Gaza Strip belongs to the State of Palestine and that the connection between the West Bank and Gaza must be through Palestinian laws and governmental institutions, with a Palestinian administrative committee and unified Palestinian security forces, within a single system and law, supported by Arab and international backing.
For his part, the Vice President of the State of Palestine, Hussein Sheikh, said in a tweet via the X platform: "We welcome President Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the beginning of the Israeli withdrawal, the release of hostages and prisoners, and the introduction of aid into Gaza, hoping this will be a step towards security, stability, and peace within a political process that leads to the implementation of the two-state solution."
