Britain Sets 3 Conditions for Full Recognition of Palestine: Curriculums, Salaries, and Elections
Translation by SadaNews: The British Telegraph reported that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will impose a number of conditions on the Palestinian Authority in exchange for establishing full diplomatic relations with it.
The newspaper mentioned that Starmer will demand a halt to payments to the families of martyrs or prisoners who carried out operations against the occupation. He will also call for changes to school curriculums that are considered anti-Semitic and for new elections before Britain opens a Palestinian embassy in East Jerusalem or signs international treaties.
According to the report: "The British Prime Minister faces severe criticism for his decision to officially recognize Palestine, a step that threatens relations with Israel and the United States".
The report states: "Starmer will now insist that the Palestinian Authority end its 'pay-for-slay' policy, which involves distributing salaries to the families of 'martyrs' who were killed or detained for attacks on Israelis".
Sources said that this demand is part of a series of reforms required before completing any two-state solution.
The United States and the families of captured Israelis condemned Starmer's move, which is considered the biggest shift in British foreign policy in decades. Donald Trump is expected to express his concerns in his speech at the United Nations today, Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Israel stated that British Jews "will never forgive" the Labour Party for the Prime Minister's decision.
The Telegraph learned, as translated by SadaNews, that British officials are working with their French counterparts to present a series of "financial and political" demands to the Palestinian Authority as part of the broader work on a two-state solution.
Topping the list is the cancellation of what is known as the "pay-for-slay" system, which grants salaries to prisoners in Israeli jails.
Critics say the decision has incentivized Palestinians to take up arms against Israel.
According to the report, sources state that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will also be pressured to push for reforms in the Palestinian curriculum in an attempt to assuage Israeli concerns about anti-Semitism.
The third demand directed to the Palestinian Authority is to fulfill the political reforms it promised, including conducting elections.
This includes ensuring that Hamas plays no future role in Palestinian leadership.
A Western official described these demands as "concrete, verifiable, and measurable commitments" to test whether the Palestinian Authority is capable of overseeing the establishment of a real state.
Britain and France are working alongside Australia, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Malta to advance plans.
Multiple sources indicated that the countries agreed that before further discussions about the state take place, there should be an immediate ceasefire and the release of remaining hostages held by Hamas.
