
Malta's Prime Minister: We Will Officially Recognize a Palestinian State Today
SadaNews - The Office of the Prime Minister in Malta announced that the country will officially recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in New York today, Monday, thus joining a group of countries in taking this step.
On Sunday, Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal recognized a Palestinian state in a move aimed at promoting the two-state solution to end the war in Gaza. France and several other countries are expected to make the same decision today, Monday.
Malta's Prime Minister Robert Abela first announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state in May.
The Mediterranean island, a member of the European Union, has a history of supporting Palestinian causes and advocates for efforts towards a two-state solution, while simultaneously maintaining diplomatic relations with Israel.
Late on Sunday, Abela praised in a Facebook post the delivery of a shipment of flour donated by Malta to Gaza "on the eve of Malta's recognition of a Palestinian state."
He stated that recognizing a Palestinian state is a "historic" move and that Malta remains committed to achieving peace in the region.
