Malta and Luxembourg Announce Their Intention to Recognize the State of Palestine
SadaNews - The Maltese Deputy Foreign Minister delivered a message from Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela to the President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas, confirming his country's official recognition of a Palestinian state during the current session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Abela had affirmed in a Facebook post last July that their position expresses their commitment to "efforts aimed at achieving a lasting peace in the Middle East."
He also stated in previous remarks published last May: "We cannot turn a blind eye to this escalating humanitarian tragedy day by day," referring to the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip.
At that time, he spoke about his visit to refugee camps in Jordan, where he met with Palestinian children who were transferred to Malta for medical treatment, reinforcing his conviction that recognizing the State of Palestine is a moral responsibility dictated by the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the region.
Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa also received a phone call from Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, during which he confirmed his country's intention to announce its recognition of the State of Palestine during the New York conference on the two-state solution, which will be held next Monday.
Bettel expressed his regret over the suffering and ongoing Israeli aggression faced by our people, both in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, during the call on Friday.
The Luxembourg Prime Minister reiterated his country's support for the Palestinian efforts to achieve peace and establish an independent sovereign Palestinian state.
For his part, Mustafa appreciated Luxembourg's position and its intention to recognize the State of Palestine, as well as its support for international efforts aimed at stopping the aggression against our people and supporting Palestinian institutions at all levels.
