UNIFIL condemns "serious" Israeli attack on its forces in southern Lebanon
SadaNews: The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced today, Wednesday, that Israeli drones dropped bombs near its positions in the Blue Line area in southern Lebanon.
UNIFIL stated in a statement that the incident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, describing it as one of the most serious attacks on its personnel and property since the ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel came into effect last November.
It added that Israeli drones dropped the bombs while the forces were removing obstacles in the Blue Line area.
UNIFIL also stated that the Israeli army must ensure the safety and security of its personnel.
The Israeli attack comes just days after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution extending the mandate of international forces in Lebanon for an additional year and four months, after which a gradual and organized withdrawal process for these forces will commence over one year.
Resolution 2790 was unanimously adopted after both Israel and the United States expressed opposition to the extension of UN forces in Lebanon.
The resolution reaffirms UNIFIL's role in supporting the Lebanese army and implementing Resolution 1701, which established a ceasefire after the July 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel.
