"Charged" Conversation Between Netanyahu and Merz Following Germany's Decision to Suspend Arms Exports to Israel

SadaNews - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Friday that Germany would stop exporting military equipment that could be used in the Gaza war to Israel, in response to Israel's plan to occupy the city of Gaza.

Following this, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu contacted Merz to express his "disappointment," while a senior Israeli official described the exchange between the two as "charged."

The decision represents a fundamental shift in German government policies that have made it one of Israel's prominent international allies.

Merz stated that understanding how the Israeli army's plan could help achieve legitimate goals is becoming "increasingly difficult."

He added, "Under these circumstances, the German government will not permit any exports of military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip until further notice."

He continued, "With the planned operation, the Israeli government bears a greater responsibility" to provide assistance to civilians in Gaza, reiterating the call to allow "UN organizations and other non-governmental institutions" full access to the territory.

Merz indicated that "The German government believes that the more stringent military action in the Gaza Strip, as determined by the Israeli cabinet last night, complicates achieving the objectives."

He mentioned, "Releasing Israeli hostages and negotiating a ceasefire are top priorities for Germany," expressing "serious concern" regarding the suffering of Gaza residents.

Merz confirmed that "The German government urges the Israeli government not to take any further steps towards annexing the West Bank."

The German Parliament mentioned in June that export licenses for military equipment to Israel worth 485 million euros (564 million dollars) were granted between October 7, 2023, and May 13, 2025.

International concerns are growing regarding the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, with the UN and organizations warning of the threat of famine.
