Officially... Ali Larijani appointed Secretary General of the Iranian National Security Council
SadaNews - Iranian President Masoud Behjatiyan has issued a decree appointing Ali Larijani as Secretary General of the Supreme National Security Council, amid changes at the highest security body in the country.
According to the "Nur News" agency, the media platform of the Supreme National Security Council, he returns to the body after a five-year absence.
Before the official announcement, Iranian media had earlier confirmed this week that Iranian Leader Ali Khamenei ratified the decree appointing his advisor, Larijani, who served as Secretary General of the Supreme National Security Council for two years at the beginning of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's first term.
The official announcement comes two days after the formation of a Supreme National Defense Committee was revealed, under the umbrella of the Supreme National Security Council, to serve as a small council focusing on security developments.
Larijani replaces General Ali Akbar Ahmadian, who will take on the "strategic tasks" within the National Defense Committee.
This appointment comes in a sensitive position nearly a year after the Guardian Council rejected his request to run in the early presidential elections for the second time after the 2021 presidential elections.
Lariijani has a record of multiple political positions, having separated from the political office of the "Revolutionary Guard," served as the President of the Parliament for 12 years, and before that was the head of the official broadcasting and television authority, and Minister of Culture and Media.
Larijani has been a member of the Supreme National Security Council for 25 years.
